Half Moon Bay Review

More than five weeks after his body washed ashore on Montara State Beach, Jason Affolter, 23, has been identified by the San Mateo County Coroner's Office.

Affolter's Nissan pickup truck apparently lost control and went off a cliff on Devil's Slide at 7 a.m. on April 27 as he made his way to work.

His fiancee, 18-year-old Glenda Cota, said she was already sure it was his body soon after it was discovered. In the days after Jason's body was found floating in the surf, Cota visited the coroner's office and identified the boxer shorts he'd been wearing.

"There's no worse news than when he passed away," Cota said, adding that the formal finding couldn't compare to the shock of the initial discovery.

Four days after his body was discovered June 8, Cota gave birth to the couple's first son. He has been named after his father.

"It's just been a very long process. It's good to be able to have that closure,"

she added.

Affolter's 14-year-old brother, Jerry Affolter, wants people to remember Jason for the kind of person he was.

"I just want you to know that he was a good person and he was always there for you," he said.

Dorothy Affolter, Jason's grandmother, is still shaken by the loss. She admits she was holding out for the glimmer of hope that Jason could still be alive somewhere, but "now it's total - finished," she said.

"He's not with his body anymore, so it doesn't really matter. He's with God now," she said.

The family has already held two memorial services for Jason and now they're planning a private funeral service.
