Felled by a tragic fire last May 21, the reincarnation of Cunha's Country Store is almost complete, and the effort to rebuild it, which has come to define community cooperation for many Coastsiders, is turning its attention to a grand opening party on the one-year anniversary of the blaze that left a gaping hole in the center of downtown Half Moon Bay.
"We're on the home stretch," said Bruce Turner, whose design-build firm TurnerBuilt has overseen the reconstruction of the store. "It looks like we're about a week to two weeks ahead of schedule right now."

As he has in the past, Turner continued to credit all involved - from subcontractors to city officials - for being ahead of schedule.
"I've been unreasonable with everybody involved to get them to do everything ahead of schedule," he said. "This is the result of everybody involved continuing to work hard at meeting or exceeding the schedule."
As the work continues, Ashcraft and the Half Moon Bay Chamber of Commerce are working on a grand opening party from 6 to 10 p.m. on the evening of May 21. Ashcraft said it will likely include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6:30 p.m., and will be largely similar to the party held to honor Cunha's employees after the fire last May.
"We'll close the streets off like we did last time," she said, "and there will be plenty of food and music."
