Give local builders a chance at Cunha

Dear editor:

I am writing to express my disappointment at the number of out-of-the-area contractors being used to rebuild the Cunha Store. At the time of the loss of this treasured Half Moon Bay landmark, it was heartwarming to see how Half Moon Bay pulled together as a community, with so many residents reaching unselfishly into their pockets to help out staff and provide support. Therefore, as an employee of a local company who bid on the job, I was both surprised and dismayed to see the managing contractor hire building companies from San Francisco and Redwood City, especially when there are such well-regarded local contractors. While the building decisions rest in the hands of the managing contractor, it seems more than insensitive in face of the community's spirit and generosity, and perhaps something that Bev Ashcraft was not even made aware of.

I hope future building efforts will look instead within the local community who came to their aid.
