Store exemplified best of HMB

Published/Last Modified on Sunday, Jun 15, 2003 - 10:00:00 pm PDT

Dear editor:

Although we do not live in Half Moon Bay, we are, like all Coastsiders, connected in some way to Cunha's.

We can never forget the day when we walked into the store, ordered sandwiches, and discovered to our consternation that neither of us had taken a wallet or purse when leaving home. A low-key discussion ensued, during which a customer, identifying himself as the mayor of Half Moon Bay, offered to lend us some money (it turned out to be unnecessary, as we found enough loose change in the car to cover our purchase). To us, ever since, this incident has exemplified what Half Moon Bay is, and how Cunha, in turn, exemplifies Half Moon Bay.

Losing an institution like Cunha's is a big deal. It will be interesting to see what is done to replace it. There is a lot at stake, and we will be following the developments with great interest.
