Dorothy Helen Pierce

Published/Last Modified on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 - 10:00:00 pm PDT

Dorothy Helen Pierce, an eight-year resident of Half Moon Bay and the mother of Judith Matienzo of Half Moon Bay, died peacefully of natural causes on May 9 at age 80 at Seton Medical Center Coastside.

Mrs. Pierce was born to Emmet and Clara Moore in Gardena, Calif. Throughout her working life, she wore many hats: She was a receptionist, office manager, accountant, payroll specialist, rancher, gardener and escrow officer.

She never really retired, according to her family. Instead, she became a tireless volunteer and advocate for seniors on the Coastside. She also served on the boards for the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons, the Native Daughters and Senior Coastsiders.

She was also an active member of several chapters of the Order of Eastern Star in California and Nevada, and in Texas, where she served as that chapter's Worthy Matron.

"Mom will be deeply missed and she will live in our hearts forever," said her daughter.

Mrs. Pierce is survived by her adult children Judith Matienzo of Half Moon Bay, Daniel W. Pierce of San Diego and Jo-Anne Purtell of Las Vegas, her son-in-law Alexander Matienzo, her grandson Vernon L. Marcrum and great-grandson Cory Marcrum. She is also survived by many other relatives across the country.

At Mrs. Pierce's request, there were no services or memorials. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her memory

to Mid-Peninsula Pathways Hospice Foundation, 201 San Antonio Circle, Suite 104, Mountain View, Calif. 94040, or

to the Senior Coastsiders Building

Fund, P.O. Box 859, Half Moon Bay, Calif. 94019.
