Cunha's Country Grocery, at 448 Main St. at Kelly Avenue, blends the best of Norman Rockwell and American grocery business.

Owner Bev Cunha Ashcraft, herself a Half Moon Bay institution, credits the "real good selection" on the shelves for 75 years with its longevity.

But as you shop, you hear tapes of popular and jazz music from the 1940s and 1950s. In the upstairs section added 30 years ago, you find homey, old-fashioned housewares, clothing, and decorative items.

"It's what people come in for," Bev says proudly.

Her mother and father, Bill and Joya Cunha, opened the store across the street 75 years ago as a saloon and farm equipment business. It moved to its present spot in 1923. Bev's been there for 60 years.

She's not alone: Helen has been at the cash register for 42 years, Josie for 12, and Bonnie for 10.
